In mormon doctrine, families can be together forever, but only by completing necessary ordinances and covenants which can only be done on this earth, in Mormon temples. However, there have obviously been millions of people in the history of the world who never had a chance to participate in these ordinances, let alone hear the name of Jesus Christ. That is why there is such a focus in mormon doctrine on family history work. Research is done to gather all necessary names, dates of birth and death, etc., so that work for the dead can be done by proxy in temples today. Then those who have already passed on have the choice of accepting this work or rejecting it.
