Did you know that the UEFA Cup accepts entrants and assigns each team with an entry point, or rank, in the competition? The number of entrants can vary from one year to the next and their entry point is based on the association’s position in the UEFA’s ranking system. In the beginning, the UEFA Cup was a straight knockout, or elimination, tournament with ties based on a home-and-away strategy. The final was once held over for two seasons, but all of that changed in 1997-98, at which time the UEFA Cup became a single match tournament in a neutral facility.
