We have probably all heard a similar story.  Judy is married to Joe and their marriage is fine until Joe starts drinking in an abusive manner.  When Joe drinks to an excess he gets sarcastic, jealous, belligerent, and violent.  Judy can tolerate the sarcasm, jealousy, and the belligerence but she simply cannot tolerate the violence.  As Judy articulates the situation, “it’s like he becomes another person—-a person I don’t know when he starts to binge drink.”  While I doubt that alcohol is the only factor underlying all of these problems, it would appear that there is an interrelationship between alcohol abuse and domestic violence at work in the lives of Judy and Joe.
