A drug that is usually used in the long term management of gout is the Allopurinol. When there is excessive levels of uric acid in the blood that are deposited into the joint then gout develops. The cause of the pain in gout is the inflammatory reaction to the uric acid crystals. Purines come from the food that we eat in our meal that is converted into uric acid. Usually the kidney can excrete any excessive amounts; but sometimes it can not manage due to a problem with the kidneys. The enzyme that converts the purine to uric acid is xanthine oxidase. The drug that inhibits this enzyme that restricts the amount of uric acid is the Allopurinol.
