I met someone on a train last year in Sweden whose job was to do translation for the EU. In her case the languages she translated were Swedish to German or English. This she did at EU headquarters, at meetings, and her translations were done as the speeches were going on – simultaneous to the action – almost instantaneous translation. the Rocket German I am considered to be quite a good linguist, for someone English, because we are notoriously rotten at speaking foreign languages, but I could not hope to do this, even in French which is my first foreign language and the sole one I would really claim to be able to speak with any fluency.
